A Visionary Leader Committed to Empowering Youths

Meet the Founder

Omololu Nick Apata is the founder of Better Future Education Foundation. I have been a vocational instructor in Canada for over 22 years before retiring in June 2023. Prior to coming to Canada in 1990, I was a vocational teacher with the Lagos State Ministry of Education for a few years. A graduate of the Lagos State College of Education where I studied Vocational Education and earned a B.A Sociology from York University, Canada, and an M.Ed. In Leadership, Higher and Adult Education from the University of Toronto. After a fulfilling career as a vocational instructor, I find myself drawn to a new mission: empowering Nigerian youths through vocational education. With decades of experience in the field, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of skills training in shaping lives and communities.

Retirement has not dimmed my passion; rather, it has fueled a new vision. Recognizing the pressing need for accessible vocational education in Nigeria, I am now committed to establishing a vocational institute through the Better Future Education Foundation dedicated to nurturing the talents of young Nigerians.

Nigeria's vibrant youth population brims with potential, yet many lack access to quality vocational training. By establishing this institute, I aim to bridge this gap, offering comprehensive programs tailored to the needs of our youths and equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in today's competitive landscape.

Inspiration Behind Our Foundation

The Founder's Journey from Vision to Reality

I have been a vocational teacher in Canada since 2000. Many of the students I teach have experienced marginalization in one form or the other. Working with them, for me, has been a privilege I do not take for granted.

Working with these young men and women also reminded me of the teeming youths in Nigeria whose future remain quite uncertain unless there’s an intervention. To that end, I started working with a community high school in my hometown about 13 years ago. In 2010, with the support of some of my teaching colleagues at Judith Nyman Secondary School, I was able to take some educational supplies stuffed in new backpacks to Nigeria to share among the students at the community school. Nothing was as exhilarating as singing and mingling with these beautiful young men and women. I followed up in 2012 with a major book drive that I shipped to Nigeria.

In 2013, I took a leave of absence without pay from my job here, went to Nigeria with welding machines and other shop tools and equipment to work with the youths in my community. I was there for seven months. That singular act put a lot of financial strain on my family, but it did not kill my passion, rather, it inspired me the more.

After the difficult experience of 2013/2014, I came to a resolve to set up a full vocational institute where young people can acquire employable and life-long sustainable skills. I knew it might take time and might require going public to seek help. It has been quite a journey! I started by shipping fairly used equipment from Canada. I got some through my school and many more through auctions. I bought an acre of land as the site for the future vocational institute and had walls built to secure the place. Simultaneously, I shipped one more container load of machinery for the same purpose. The equipment and tools are currently sitting in a shed at the site. I have now come to seek help from the global community to get the institute built….
